Running around in circles…

I started back running last week.  I got in 3 days of good running for near about 8 miles, and I mean good as in “anything is good” right now, not that the weather was cooperative.  On two of those days, there was precipitation…the first was snow, the second rain.  And it hasn’t been over 35 degrees on a run yet, but that’s okay.

This week, I have run once already (4 miles) and it is starting to feel good.  I still haven’t hit that all-too-critical point where my energy is up, but I can feel it coming.

Also, I got a Garmin ForeRunner 305 to replace my broken and antiquated Timex Ironman Bodylink.  This solution has a much better GPS receiver and the data is stored on the watch, so there is no expensive, fragile little gizmo that I should have to tie onto my beltloop or put in my pocket.  I haven’t lost signal with this device yet, though I left with the battery on low one time and the watch cut off before I got halfway.

Another nice thing is the watch is charged via USB.  I haven’t stress-tested it yet, to see how many hours it will go between charges.  I assume it will last long enough to do a marathon, but I can’t confirm or deny that yet, as 4 miles < 26.2 miles. (by a bit, anyway)

Oh, and it seems there are no takers on the Marine Corps Marathon… slackers!

Tree man

One of my co-workers, Brad, came in this morning and said he saw on Discovery a man who was turning into a tree.  So, I looked it up.  It’s gross.  There are, of course, a plethora of videos out there (YouTube, et al.), if you can’t get enough.  I’ll let you Google it.

Munchkin has RSV…

Sophia came down with RSV this past weekend. Antonella, Sophia, and I spent 6 hours mostly waiting at the ER on Sunday. She would sometimes cough until she would vomit, so we figured we would get it checked out. For a nose swab and a chest X-ray, it took that long. The nurse practitioner that saw her said that they had a “nursing problem.” It would have been nice to know that ahead of time.

Initially, our response when we heard she had RSV was shock, as we were Pavlovian conditioned back when she first came home from the hospital that RSV was bad mojo. But, because I had read up on it quite a bit I felt a) relieved that she had it now as opposed to earlier, and b) she seems fit enough to deal with it now.

Anyway, Sophia is just about over it. She is quite the little trouper. All the while, she has played with the same veracity and kept the same sunny disposition.

Sick of working, or sick WHILE working?

This morning, I stopped off and got one of those Ciabatta breakfast sandwiches at Wawa.  I noticed that there was one person working there in the deli.  I ordered my sandwich, paid for it, then waited for her to produce my sandwich.  Just as she was wrapping it, she started coughing all over the place.  One of the managers was walking by and said “How are you today?”  She replied, “Oh, I’m still sick, but I have to work.”  I am sure she has to work…but is it really appropriate?

As I tossed the phlegm sandwich in the trash on the way out, I got to thinking how it must be to work a wage job and get sick.  Then I thought about the McDonald’s in Germany, where even the fry tender is a salaried employee with benefits.  Sad state of affairs, really.

Everything is Copacetic

Not much to report here.  Had a good weekend.  We haven’t been traveling much lately.  Our next trip as a family will probably be in July.

Sophia endured her first full week of day care.  She had fun, but when I would pick her up, she would run to me and want me to pick her up.  But, she has gotten on a regular sleep pattern all-of-a-sudden.  Which is good…very good.
